Teachers, parents, and other academic professionals always say that the youth of America are the future of America, which is why the youth of America should be educated to the highest extent available. One thing that might prevent some of the nation’s smartest youth from becoming incredibly successful as they grow older is their health habits, lack of health insurance, or an increase in obesity. Information released about the age group of 18 to 29 year olds came from “Health, United States: 2008,” from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 32nd annual review of the country’s health. Obesity rates for 18 to 29 years olds has tripled since 1970, when the number was at 8 percent, up to 24 percent from 2005-2006.

The review also found that Americans aged 18 to 29 have the highest rate for emergency room visits that are related to injury and that unintentional injuries, accidents, homicide and suicide account for 70 percent of deaths in the same age group. When it comes to the youth of America being uninsured, the numbers were quite shocking. The age group of 20 to 24, in the year 2006, saw 34 percent of that group without insurance. The age group of 25 to 29 in 2006 saw 29 percent of the group uninsured. The age group of 18 to 19 saw 21 percent of the group uninsured. The review also found that between the years 2004 and 2006, 17 percent of young Americans decided to forgo medical care, prescription medicine, mental healthcare, eyeglasses or contacts because they could not afford them.

The health of the youth of America is important to the overall health of the nation in the coming years. Youth find it difficult to eat healthy these days because of all the junk food readily available to them at school, at work, or at home. Living a healthy life begins in the home, where parents can regulate the diet of their child and help them employ good habits regarding their health. Encourage children to drink plenty of water instead of soda or other drinks full of sugar. Soda has caffeine in it, which can become addictive to young children, and sugary drinks are not good for the overall health of children. If young Americans, living on their own, cannot afford to purchase health insurance or are not offered health insurance from their employer then they will not be able to visit the doctor for routine checkups. There really is no way around this situation.

When children begin to grow up they will encounter all kinds of peer pressure from drinking to smoking and using other tobacco products. Parents should make it known to kids at a young age that the use of alcohol, tobacco, smoking cigarettes or using other drugs is absolutely against the rules of your home. If you cement these ideals and rules into your child at a young age they might be able to stand up against peer pressure and avoid using any of these products.

X-rays are an important part of the medical field when it comes to determining whether or not people have broken bones, blood clots, tumors, cavities and other medical conditions. X-rays are used commonly across the country by millions of doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel. X-rays have helped to save lives over the past handful of decades by detecting tumors at an early stage. X-rays have also helped doctors determine the proper course of treatment for cancer patients and patients who have broken, shattered, or fractured bones. It is important though for doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel to examine each use of an x-ray on a patient so that the patient is not exposed to a large amount of cumulative radiation during their lifetime.

Hundreds of studies have been conducted over the past couple of decades regarding x-rays and the effect that radiation exposure has on the health of patients. Many of the studies have concluded that exposure to radiation does not increase the risk of developing cancer. Studies have found that there is no difference in the radiation people get from nature and the radiation people are exposed to by x-rays in terms of causing problems within the body or developing cancer. There are, on the other hand, two major hazards caused by exposure to x-rays. The two hazards caused by exposure to x-rays include the following:

Damage to some cells: only a small amount of cells can be damaged and they will die prematurely.

Genetic damage to reproductive cells: damage to an ovum in a woman or a sperm cell in a man can lead to a deformed baby or a miscarriage.

The cells in unborn children are growing rapidly, which means that they are incredibly sensitive to radiation from x-rays. The dose of radiation that an unborn child can be subjected to is regulated by United States Federal standards. The standards say that unborn children cannot be exposed to more than 0.5 rem during a nine month pregnancy. In layman’s terms, that number would equate to 10 x-rays during the pregnancy. Typically, a pregnant woman would not need 10 x-rays unless she was suffering from a serious medical condition or ailment. On the other side of things, dental x-rays should not affect the pregnancy of a woman because the x-rays are seriously focused on one area of the body and are at least 1/3 of the strength of a normal x-ray.

Studies regarding x-rays and the risk of developing cancer or suffering from cancer-related death show that patients will not experience an increase in the risk of developing cancer. In fact, studies show that it would take 300 x-rays in one calendar year for a patient’s risk to develop cancer to rise to one percent. There are not many people that need 300 x-rays in one calendar year, especially since doctors will determine whether or not the x-rays scheduled are actually needed for the patient. The doctor will be able to determine if the patient’s condition actually warrants an x-ray or if the patient’s condition can be cured with antibiotics.

Cancer is one of the leading diseases that result in death in not only the United States each year but also across the world. There has been no definitive cure found for cancer but some treatments and therapies have been found to work better than others on certain forms of cancer. The survival rate for cancer depends on the stage the disease is in when it has been discovered in the body of the patient. One form of cancer, which is diagnosed in roughly 24,000 Americans each year, is known as throat cancer. Throat cancer affects the throat (pharynx) or the voice box (larynx). Half of the cases diagnosed each year affect the pharynx and the other half affects the larynx.

The symptoms of throat cancer include one or more of the following:

Cough

Changes in voice such as hoarseness

Difficulty swallowing

Ear pain

Lump or sore that does not heal

Sore throat

Unexplained weight loss

If any of these symptoms or new ones last for more than two weeks consult a physician immediately. These symptoms are also synonymous with the flu, a cold, strep throat and laryngitis so you might not have throat cancer but instead an illness that can be cured with antibiotics. Experts have not been able to identify what causes the cells in the throat to mutate and form a tumor. There are six main forms of throat cancer and they are as follows:

Nasopharyngeal Cancer: this form of cancer begins in the nasopharynx, which is the part of the throat just behind the nose.

Oropharyngeal Cancer: this form of cancer begins in the oropharynx, which is the part of the throat that is directly behind the mouth.

Hypopharyngeal Cancer: this form of cancer begins in the hypopharynx, which is the lower part of the throat, just above the esophagus and the windpipe.

Glottic Cancer: this form of cancer begins in the vocal cords.

Supraglottic Cancer: this form of cancer begins in the upper area of the larynx and includes cancer that affects the epiglottis. The epiglottis is a piece of cartilage that blocks food from entering the windpipe.

Subglottic Cancer: this form of cancer begins in the lower area of the voice box, which is below the vocal cords.

The factors that increase the risk of dev eloping throat cancer include one or more of the following:

Smoking and chewing tobacco

Excessive alcohol use

Poor dental hygiene

A sexually transmitted disease known as the human papillomavirus

A diet that lacks in fruits and vegetables

Exposure to asbestos

Patients diagnosed with throat cancer will need to endure treatments that could result in learning how to swallow, eat solid foods, and talk all over again. Doctors, following treatment, will have patients seek help for the following:

The care for a surgical opening in the throat if a tracheotomy was used

Difficulty eating

Difficulty swallowing

Stiffness and pain in the neck

Speech problems

Mental health is perhaps one of the most important things a person can focus on during their lifetime aside from physical and emotional health. In fact, all three areas go hand in hand and can help a person live a long and happy life if they are healthy in all three categories. We take care of our physical health by seeing the doctor every couple of months, going to the dentist, visiting the optometrist and much more. However, one question remains, how often do we work on our mental health? There are thousands, if not millions, of people across the country who seek the help of psychologists for various mental health problems such as depression or obsessive-compulsive disorders.

The following is a list of tips for staying mentally healthy at any age:

Learn how to balance work, sleep, and play in your life. The balance between all three is vitally important to your overall physical help while a balance of sleep and good nutrition will also help your brain.

There is no harm in doing crossword puzzles, math puzzles, or other puzzles to give your mind a workout. Another way to give your brain a workout is to read as much as you possibly can each day of the week.

Scientific research has proven that being grateful makes people happier. Experts recommend that you take time at the end of the day to reflect on the good things that occurred that day and what is good in your life at the time.

Connecting with other people is vitally important to one’s mental health. The more acquaintances and friends one has the healthier their mentality will be in the end.

Are you looking for something that will make you feel good as well as others around you? If so, the answer is to smile. Smile as much as you can because you will feel good and those around you will feel good.

Are you lonely? Research studies show that owning a pet can make all the difference in the world, especially for elderly who live alone.

Add some responsibility to your life by owning a pet, caring for another person, or even building a garden in your backyard.

One of the most important mental health tips is to keep a healthy balance between exercising and sensible eating. If your body is healthy and cared for on a regular basis your mind will be free to work well.

It is important to remind everyone that staying mentally healthy is something that should be done all the time, not just when things start to go south. For instance, people can begin practicing mental health in their teens or 20’s instead of waiting to be diagnosed at a later age with depression, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease or any other mental illness. Anyone practicing mental health should not be afraid to seek help when they are doing so from a psychologist or another mental health expert.

Having a baby can be a very exciting and emotional time in a person’s life. There will be a flood of information and advice coming your way, but what information and advice should you listen to and which should you disregard? There are many myths and facts when it comes to raising a healthy newborn, and some of those will be discussed here.

One of the most common pieces of advice an expectant mother receives is that breastfeeding is best. According to research, breastfeeding is in fact best for newborns. The benefits of breast milk include easier digestion for the baby, less constipation and obesity. Also, the newborn is more likely to have improved immunity and less allergy-risk. Breast-feeding also has benefits for mothers as well. Aside from its low cost and convenience, there has also been found to be less post-partum depression and a lesser risk of breast cancer in women who breastfeed.

Although breast feeding is statistically the better option, some women are not capable of breast-feeding, and one should not feel guilty or worried because of this. If bottle feeding is a better option for you, that is okay too! There are formulas available, such as soy and lactose free that mimic breast milk and have been found to be just as good for newborns.

The easiest way to prevent newborn illness to quite simply, wash your hands! We have all learned that washing out hands gets rid of germs and bacteria, and this remains true while caring for a newborn. You should wash your hands before feeding, changing and after feeding and changing the baby. Do not be afraid to ask any visitors or guests to wash their hands as well. If you are doing your part to keep your baby healthy, you should also make sure anybody else who is coming into contact with your baby is doing their part as well. An easy solution is to keep bottles of antibacterial hand gel around the house for greater convenience.

Keeping your newborn healthy and safe is any parent or caregiver’s top priority. One of the greatest precautions one can take to ensure that a child is safe is to make sure the baby sleeps on its back. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), is one of the leading causes of infant death. You can help prevent SIDS by providing a firm mattress in the baby’s crib, as well as removing an overly stuffed blankets or toys that the baby could use to cover their face. It is also not recommended that parents have their baby sleep next to them in bed. This is very dangerous as a parent can suffocate or smother the child while asleep and not be aware of the situation until it is too late.

A few more tips for keeping your newborn safe and healthy are the following: always place your baby in a rear facing car seat when in the car. When in the car seat make sure the straps are tightened to fit and properly hold the baby. Also, keep your whole family safe by checking the batteries in your home’s smoke detector.

If you are a person that likes to be out in the sun, then you should probably know what you could do to protect yourself in your skin. There are things that you probably have heard of and others that you may not have. Knowing how to protect yourself is the first step to preventing any kind of problem later from the sun.

What Can The Sun Do?

You may be wondering what the sun can do to you and your body. There are many things that sun exposure can do that harmed your body. The first is that sun exposure can cause cancer. Usually the cancer is in the skin and because of overexposure to UV rays that are in the sun. Skin cancer is a large problem and many people end up dealing with it because we are so used to being in the sun and not caring.

Another problem that occurs from the sun is aging of the skin. When someone spends a lot of time in the sun, his or her skin usually starts to age faster than it should. This can cause wrinkles and age spots well before it should. This can also cause skin to feel a little more rough to the touch.

How to Prevent Problems

There are some things that you can do to protect yourself from the sun. The first is to make sure you are wearing sun block when you are outside. The sun block will act as a protective of your skin and keep the UV rays that can cause problems out. Sun block will also help to keep skin moist and healthy.

Another way to protect your skin from the sun is to wear clothing. If you are able to, you should keep a good tee shirt and pants on while you are outside in the sun. If you are going to be exposed the sun for long periods of time, you may want to think about wearing clothing that will protect your skin but that will also be cool.

The times of day that the sun is, the worst is really not the time that you would think. Usually the best time to be out in the sun is late in the evening or early in the morning. A good way to prevent any kind of some problems is to make sure that you are out only in these hours. If you have to go out to when the sun is high, make sure that you are wearing clothing that will protect you.

Protecting yourself from sun exposure is not really as hard as you think. You just need to know what you can do and what could happen should you exposure skin to the sun too much. Take the time to really think about it when you are getting ready to go outside and you will see that you are not exposing as much skin to the sun and you are protecting yourself more. You also notice that you will not have as many problems as some people who stay in the sun for long periods of time.

There are hundreds of prisons across the country housing thousands, if not millions of criminals for crimes they have been convicted of committing. Some of those criminals are appealing the ruling on their case, which could include life in prison, a shorter term, or the death penalty depending on the state they where they are serving time. The appeals could have been started because the criminal feels he or she received too strong of a sentence, he or she truly did not commit the crime, or he or she feels that their health is in jeopardy while spending time in prison. One such criminal, Thomas “Tommy Shots” Gioeli, is complaining about being in prison and that it is bad for his overall health.

Gioeli is a convicted mob killer who is spending time in a Brooklyn lockup. He appeared before a Brooklyn Federal Court judge with a long list of complaints about where he is spending time in prison and how bad it is for his health. The first complaint on his list is that he needs a toenail clipper because his toenails are so long and dirty. A toenail clipper is not allowed where Gioeli is being held because he is being held in solitary confinement, where sharp items are not permitted. Authorities believe that Gioeli is the acting head of the Colombo crime family. The other complaint registered by Gioeli is that his only eating utensil is a spoon, since sharp objects are not permitted in solitary confinement, he is not allowed to have a fork or knife.

The defense lawyer for Gioeli, Adam Perlmutter, said that Gioeli has taken a stand against eating certain foods while in prison because he cannot cut them. Gioeli does not want to run the risk of choking on uncut food and possibly die. Gioeli suffers from a broken dental bridge, which gives him trouble swallowing food that is not cut properly. Gioeli is also complaining about the menu being served to him. The prison is giving him rice and French fries with his hamburgers, which does not seem to be a problem in most cases, but this is not most cases. Gioeli has diabetes, and rice and French fries, or other starches, should not be consumed often.

Gioeli is having trouble cleaning himself since being moved to solitary confinement, which was done to protect him from a death threat phoned into the prison, because he is only given a Styrofoam cup with disinfectant and three sheets of paper towels. Gioeli also has a heart condition, which is not being cared for properly along with the diabetes while he is in prison. The judge Gioeli spoke to is considering releasing him on bail if the feds do not come back with a status report on his situation within the next handful of weeks. Gioeli has been charged with the killings of Frank “Chestnut” Marasa, John Minerva, Michael Imbergamo, Richard Greaves and former Colombo family underboss William “Wild Bill” Cutolo. All of the killings took place between 1991 and 1995.

Having health insurance is not guaranteed if you live in the United States. Instead, employers can provide their employees with health insurance if they are full-time employees. A full-time employee is one who works 40 or more hours per week and has applied for the company’s benefit package. There are thousands of people who own their own business or who work for themselves, which means that no one provides them with health insurance. If this is the case, health insurance can be purchased from health insurance companies in each individual state. Some people in this country can get lucky and visit a doctor who will continue to treat the patient even if they lose medical coverage while in the care of the doctor. There is one such doctor in this country who performs this charity and has been nationally recognized for his work.

The doctor’s name is Pedro Jose Greer, who works at Miami’s Mercy Hospital. Greer is a gastroenterologist, who is known to his patients as Doctor Joe, tells his patients that if they do not have medical coverage it is no big deal no matter what the cost of their procedure is when in his care. “When did it become acceptable in my profession,” says the 53-year-old physician, “to say ‘No’ to somebody because they have no money?” This attitude has led Greer to be honored with the 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom. He was awarded this honor back in August because he cares for the poor with dignity and respect.

Some of the highlights of Greer’s career include the following:

Greer founded the Camillus Health Concern in 1984, which is a Miami clinic that provides health care to 10,000 homeless and low income patients on an annual basis

Greer founded the St. John Bosco clinic in Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood to treat low income and immigrant patients

Greer was recently named the assistant dean of academic affairs at Florida International University’s new medical school

Greer was born in 1956 in a Miami hospital, Jackson Memorial, after only 6.5 months of pregnancy. The doctor who treated Greer’s mother thought she was crazy and was not going into labor but she wound up giving birth to Greer only three hours later on a gurney in the hospital. Greer and his mother returned to Cuba only a couple of weeks later but returned to the United States in 1959 after Fidel Castro took over. Greer grew up in Cuban Miami and went to Roman Catholic schools during his educational career. Greer earned his medicine degree at a Catholic university in the Dominican Republic and then returned to Miami to begin treating the poor, low income, and homeless of Miami.

In a book published by Greer in 1999, titled “Waking up in America,” he said “In America it seemed as if we didn’t care if you suffered, but if you were about to die, we’d scramble to save you at (the hospital) — and then send you back to suffer, to the streets.”

Diabetes is a disease which affects 7.8% of people living in the United States. Diabetes occurs when insulin is not produced properly in the body. Insulin converts materials such as food into energy for the body. If you suffer from diabetes, your body does not properly produce insulin, thus robbing your body of the energy it needs. Genetics and environmental factors, such as weight (obesity) and lack of exercise have been found to be a determining factor in diabetes.

There are different types of diabetes, and it is important to know the difference between them. The first kind of diabetes is known as Type 1 Diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes affects 5-10% of those who are diagnosed with diabetes. This type of diabetes occurs when the body does not produce insulin. The most common type of diabetes is known as Type 2 Diabetes. This particular kind of diabetes is a result of the body resisting insulin along with an insulin deficiency. About 4% of pregnant women are affected by gestational diabetes. This occurs when your body does not produce the insulin it needs to support your body during its pregnancy. One of the final types of diabetes is known as pre-Diabetes. Nearly 57 million people have pre-diabetes in the United States. Pre-diabetes means that a person’s body has high glucose levels, but the levels are not high enough to be considered diabetes.

There are many health concerns associated with diabetes if they are not properly treated and controlled. Some side effects of diabetes can be blindness or loss of vision, heart and kidney disease as well as nerve and blood vessel damage. If you properly care for yourself then your risk for one of these side effects is greatly reduced.

If you find that you do have diabetes, there are treatment options. The first main treatment to diabetes is testing your blood sugar. By checking your blood sugar regularly, you can monitor how foods and activities affect your blood sugar levels. If regulating what you eat and drink do not control your insulin levels, then a doctor may suggestion putting you on some sort of medication, such as insulin. As always, eating a healthy diet and exercising can also help combat diabetes and its effects. If you are a smoker and have been diagnosed with diabetes, you should quit smoking immediately. In regards to alcohol, you do not need to stop drinking altogether; however, it is recommended to only consume no more than 1 serving each day.

If you or someone you know has recently been diagnosed with diabetes, it is important to learn all the facts. If you are trying to help someone you know, such as a relative with their recent diabetes diagnosis, it is very important to be supportive. You can also be an important factor in helping your loved one make important healthy choices in their life that can help them battle their diabetes. Exercising together is another great way to show support while also encouraging the diabetic to engage in a healthy lifestyle.
